I tasted the bitter tang of blood, not uncommon to my mouth. But even now, as the warm liquid took hold of my throat, I found myself flinching at the taste. But no sooner than I had, I regretted my actions for the sudden movement sent a spike of pain shooting down my spine. I knew then my back had been smashed. Not that I doubted death would come.
“Has there ever been peace on this isle?”
A shadow fell over my battered body, a black shadow contrasting against the oranges and yellows of the bloody, burning battlefield. Even though the voice seemed to belong to someone I knew; I didn’t quite know who the owner of the shadow was and this only drove on my curiosity. I tried to focus on the figure – to define who this newcomer was – but the light began to fade. I realised at that moment that there was no more pain, and that my breathing had faltered.
I was dying.
