The Grassland

Habano pulled off a leg for himself and started cracking at it merrily. "Have you two ever had bone marrow, from an elk?"

Unoki and K'Yaku shook their heads simultaneously.

He snapped the bone open and worked at the two pieces with his claws until they split open, revealing marrow. "Try it, you two!"

K'Yaku and Unoki both rushed at once, banging heads but each getting a good lick.

Habano laughed loudly and grabbed some more meat for himself.

Unoki turned back to the carcass, taking another mouthful of elk. K'Yaku continued to lick the marrow.

"It's good, huh?"

K'Yaku nodded.

He grinned and continued eating.

Unoki finished her food and sat back in the grass.

Habano finished a few minutes later and flopped onto hid back. He winced slightly at his shoulder, but it was a dull pain.

Unoki finished cleaning herself, looking up at Habano with gleaming eyes.

He smiled blissfully and watched a few clouds. "This is what I did all day at my old home, y'know."

"You hunted all day?" Unoki asked in disbelief. K'Yaku climbed back onto Habano's head.

"No, not hunt. Just laid around and stared at the clouds." He laughed. "But once a week we did go hunting for the entire day. We'd store the food and then we'd go on doing whatever we wanted."

"Sounds peaceful." Unoki lay back in the grass, watching the sky.

"It was." His smile faded a little. "Most of the time. Not everyone had the peaceful life. Most of our prey there had powers as well. It wasn't unusual that someone would be injured in a hunt."

"Prey - had powers?!" Unoki looked surprised, "Where was this place?"

"Oh, quite a ways from here. Towards the west." He waved towards the direction. "Everything had powers there. Everything that ate, that is. And we lived with more than just wolves, too."

"Sounds interesting!" Unoki clearly wanted to hear more.

"It was." He looked over at the pups with a grin. "Ever heard of a lion or tigers? There were quite a few of them where I lived. Birds, too. Almost everything meat eating, really. But we'd lose someone occasionally due to hunting." He spread one of his wings, which was covered in small, healed scars. "And get injured regularly."

"They sound powerful..." Unoki blinked.

"They were." He gave a little sigh. "You Dusk Isle wolves have it much easier then we did. It was especially hard because the prey could talk." He tucked his wings again and added, "Have you ever tried to eat something that you had just spoken with a minute ago? Not easy."

"So...everyone spoke the same language?" Unoki was obviously fascinated.

He laughed. "When you say it, it sounds weird. Yes, we all did. There was a group consisting of prey and meat eaters taht took it upon themselves to make sure nothing happened." He frowned a little. "Towards the end, they didn't do a very good job..."
